SHOW NOTES:

On this week’s intro, Emma and Josie give their takes on The Tortured Poet’s Department, including their favorite songs and their very controversial takes on who some of the songs are about. Then, they go on to address this week’s Ask The Everygirl, which is about fitness routines. Josie shares her regular workout routine, as well as how she was able to heal her relationship with exercise through cycle syncing and learning how to listen to what her body needs at different moments. Emma shares how she’s learned to treat exercise as a form of play and also how she adapts her exercise routine to fit with different seasons of her life. The episode with Valerie Agyeman begins with Josie asking Valerie when she first got interested in wellness. Valerie shares her story of dealing with thoughts of disordered eating and struggling with her energy and mood as a kid before coming upon cycle syncing in adulthood and realizing that she could take charge of her health and wellbeing. Josie and Valerie have a conversation about how disordered eating was infused into our culture not too long ago, and everything that has changed in our conversations around health and wellness since then. Valerie then dives into some of the things that we tend to overlook as a society when it comes to our health, in particular women’s health. She explores the importance of eating foods that fuel your bone health and your fertility. Josie and Valerie then have a conversation about fertility, and why it is important to consider your fertility as a part of your health even if you are not wanting to get pregnant. Valerie provides several tips for people who are struggling to maintain their fertility or balance their hormones. Josie asks Valerie how people can tell if they aren’t eating enough throughout the day, and Valerie gives some examples of lesser-known hunger cues. Valerie and Josie then have a conversation about how the reproductive cycle is the fifth vital sign, and the injustice of the fact that it has been ignored in women’s health for centuries. Valerie walks through some symptom tracking she does to improve her wellbeing and stay connected to her body throughout all phases of her cycle. She also provides some ideas for high-protein meals that you can whip up at home—essentially, “lazy girl meals.” Finally, Josie asks Valerie to explain her morning and nighttime routines, and Valerie walks through a few rituals. The episode wraps up with some rapid-fire questions.
