113: Rethinking Beauty Standards with Founders of Dieux, Charlotte Palermino & Joyce de Lemos

Charlotte Palermino and Joyce de Lemos are two of the co-founders of Dieux, a buzzworthy and celeb-loved skincare brand built on the foundations of no-BS marketing and transparent ingredients. Charlotte has a background in women's lifestyle media and marketing, while Joyce is a clinical cosmetic chemist, giving the duo a fascinating perspective on the beauty industry, skincare that works, and toxic marketing. Charlotte and Joyce share all of their best beauty tips from slugging, to tips to know if a product is worth your money, to contouring with self-tanner. The beauty founders also talk about how the beauty industry needs to change: anti-aging messaging, greenwashing in "clean beauty," lack of regulations, and how the industry is affected by gender roles and toxic masculinity. This episode will leave you with amazing skincare tips you've never heard before, and a different perspective on beauty.

SHOW NOTES:

Before addressing the Ask The Everygirl this week, Josie and Emma discuss the second half of season 3 of Bridgerton, including their Polin takes and how they feel about the showrunners changing Francesca’s storyline. Then, they dive into a listener’s question about having her first fight with her new boyfriend and how to argue in a healthy way. Josie launches into a long explanation of why arguments and disagreements in a healthy partnership should feel safe, instead of feeling like they might risk the end of your relationship. She explains that she has received great advice from her own therapist on how to approach each fight like it is a positive thing for her relationship instead of a negative thing. She shares how she and her boyfriend make a point of ensuring that their relationship is very freeing to each other, instead of restrictive. Josie also provides an explanation of the different stress responses, and how learning her boyfriend’s stress response changed the way they fought for the better. Finally, she discusses the concept of “kitchen sinking” in an argument. The interview with Charlotte Palermino and Joyce de Lemos begins with Josie asking both about their first beauty memories and how they first got interested in beauty. Then, she asks them if they see any problems with the way we approach beauty in our culture and the current beauty marketing landscape. Joyce discusses how frequently beauty products are marketed as being able to completely change key features of people’s faces, and how problematic the beauty standards are in terms of things that simply make people unique. Charlotte talks about how she thinks that the main problem with the beauty industry is its approach to anti-aging, and how the industry must accept aging before it can truly become less problematic. This then evolves into a conversation about marketing and misinformation. Josie asks what the deal is in the beauty industry with marketing things that are not even true. Charlotte and Joyce walk through a few major red flags when it comes to beauty marketing, and also advise on where to splurge and save on beauty products. Charlotte says that consumers should always ask themselves what they are trying to achieve before buying a new beauty product. Joyce discusses a bit about her formulation process for what they refer to as “slow and steady skincare” in an industry that pushes fast results. The three also have a conversation about the dangers of filters and the impact that they have on young girls and women as they age and discover plastic surgery. Then, the discussion turns to the pros and cons of the “clean beauty” movement, including whether or not it is actually possible to make a product that is fully “clean.” They discuss some of the red flags for beauty products that might not have been appropriately clinically tested, and Joyce explains their own vetting process at Dieux. The episode closes with Charlotte and Joyce talking through their own favorite beauty products and habits, plus some rapid-fire questions.
