Episode 40: The Viral Duo Behind Excuse My Grandma on Changing Dating Ideals, Red Flags, and Finding Your Real-Life Hollywood Romance

This is not your grandmother's dating advice–unless you're Kim Murstein. Kim started a podcast with her Grandma Gail to discuss the generational differences of dating, sex, and relationships. Since the podcast’s launch, the duo has been featured on multiple news networks and have grown a massive fanbase on TikTok. In this episode, Josie talks with Kim and Gail about dating red flags, the pros and cons of dating in the 1950s versus 2023, and how to be more confident. They also answer audience questions to give you advice to improve your love life. Trust us: You will be LOLing and "aww"-ing your way through this episode, but will also come away with tangible advice (Grandma Gail knows what she's talking about).

SHOW NOTES:

This week’s episode is for Everygirls of all ages, because we’re sitting down with Kim and Gail of the viral Excuse My Grandma podcast. Josie begins the conversation by asking Kim and Gail to discuss the journey that was starting Excuse My Grandma as a grandmother and granddaughter duo during the height of the pandemic. Kim and Gail discuss the challenges of pushing their content out to a crowd of both millennials and Gen Z as well as generations over age 50. The three also dive into a brief discussion of grandparent and grandchild relationships, and how those relationships have changed with technology. The conversation then pivots to sharing, under-sharing, and over-sharing in dating, and whether it’s appropriate to ask if a potential partner is in therapy on the first date (spoiler alert: Gail does not think that’s your business). Josie asks Gail to elaborate on some of the pros and cons of dating back in the 1950s and 1960s, as opposed to some of the pros and cons of dating in 2023. Gail explains some of the disadvantages to having the appearance of so many choices in the dating world in the modern day. Kim explains why she often appreciates the nostalgia of an older age of dating, plus her penchant for chivalry in her own dating life. The three also have a discussion about the importance of sexual liberation and increased physical intimacy in the dating world of the 2020s. The episode then turns to dating shows like The Bachelor and The Bachelorette, specifically the influence that reality television can have on young, inexperienced women. Josie then opens the conversation up to audience questions about dating, sex, and relationships, beginning with the question of why is always feels like there are never enough good guys to go around. The episode closes with some rapid-fire questions for Kim and Gail, from their respective dream date nights to their celebrity crushes.
