Episode 12: Happy Hour: Making a big career change with Branded Content Editor Ashley Selleke

Join Josie and Ashley as they sit down for a happy hour chat all about making a huge career change! When Ashley graduated college with a nursing degree, she realized pretty quickly that nursing was not going to be her path for very long. However, she stuck with it, and ended up continuing as a nurse through the pandemic, all the while knowing that she would rather be working in media. In this episode, Ashley shares all of the highs and lows of transitioning between dramatically different industries, from working multiple jobs to the mixed emotions of leaving an old career behind. Whether you’re changing careers, switching jobs, or just preparing for a life transition, this episode is for you.

SHOW NOTES:

For this week’s Happy Hour episode, Josie is joined by The Everygirl’s Branded Content Editor Ashley Selleke. After a short intro to Ashley and her signature vodka pasta recipe (if you have’t tried it yet, you’re missing out), Josie dives right into asking Ashley questions all about her transition from nursing to working in the editorial space at The Everygirl. Ashley tells the story of how she first became interested in entering the medical field in high school, and what it was like to go to nursing school at the University of Michigan while simultaneously not feeling passionate about nursing itself. When she entered the field post-grad, Ashley felt that she was missing a creative outlet, so she started a blog; before long, she was an Editorial Intern at The Everygirl. After Ashley reveals what it was like to work two jobs until she felt confident enough to leave nursing entirely this past June, Josie asks Ashley to speak about the concrete steps she took to boost her confidence within the media industry. The two also discuss Ashley’s Tik Tok following, and what it meant for her to leave nursing when she had built her social platform on the app around nursing-related content. From there, you’ll hear Josie and Ashley cover the importance of checking in with yourself when it comes to your career, and when to pay attention to the red flags within a certain career path. Ashley gives her biggest tips for getting creative about making money during a career change and working with what you have to demonstrate that you’re a qualified candidate for your true dream job. The episode closes with some tips for building a resumé and being ready for any opportunity that might come your way.
