Episode 23: Hustle Culture, Work-Life Balance, and Secrets to Success with Founder of Create & Cultivate, Jaclyn Johnson

Jaclyn Johnson is known as the ultimate multi-hyphenate and serial entrepreneur. In 2012, Jaclyn founded Create & Cultivate, a media company that grew into globally-recognized career conferences which featured the biggest names like Kim Kardashian, Martha Stewart, and Chrissy Teigen. Since then, Jaclyn has launched more successful companies (such as New Money Ventures and Maie Wine), wrote a best-selling book (Work Party) and hosts a top-performing podcast (also named Work Party). So...yeah we had a lot of questions for her. Josie and Alaina grill Jaclyn for all the secrets to her success and how she got her start. They also discuss hustle culture, how work environments are changing, and how to recharge your energy to show up as your best self in your career.

SHOW NOTES:

The episode of The Everygirl Podcast kicks off with a conversation all about Jaclyn Johnson’s impressive personal history and career accomplishments. Jaclyn shares how growing up with parents who both worked for themselves infused her with an entrepreneurial spirit from a young age, plus how that evolved when she went to college at NYU. From there, Alaina and Jaclyn dive into a conversation about networking and the skills that Jaclyn acquired when she first hit the marketing scene in New York City as a young woman in business. Jaclyn tells the story of how she took a chance and moved to Los Angeles after a breakup for a new job, only to be let go a few months later. She discusses what it was like to build up from nothing in a new city where she knew no one, and how freelance marketing led her to start her first business by accident. Alaina asks Jaclyn all about Create & Cultivate, as well as how Jaclyn found the confidence to launch such a game-changing company. Jaclyn shares how she became passionate about mentoring other female business owners, the birth of her venture firm, New Money Ventures, and what she looks for as an investor. The three chat about Maie Wines, a single-serve Californian wine brand and Jaclyn’s latest company. Josie asks Jaclyn to expand on her thoughts on hustle culture and the new Gen-Z approach to work, and Jaclyn gives helpful tips for maintaining a work/life balance while still achieving big things. Finally, the three have a conversation about maintaining humanity in every interaction in the corporate world, plus how to come to terms with the fact that not everyone will love you in the business world. The episode closes with some rapid-fire questions, including Jaclyn’s favorite books on investing.
