SHOW NOTES:

Before this week’s Ask The Everygirl, Josie and Emma talk about some pop culture moments from the summer, including Charli XCX’s Brat album. They catch up and check in on each other’s tomfoolery summers. Then, the Ask The Everygirl this week comes from a listener who has a friend who is friends with her ex and keeps bringing him up around her. Josie explains why setting a boundary with this friend is absolutely within her right, and in fact is something she must do in order to take care of herself. Emma agrees with Josie that even if the friendship doesn’t end, it’s totally fine for this listener to diminish her friendship with this friend in order to protect her peace. Then, the interview with Act + Acre founder and celebrity hairstylist Helen Reavey begins with Josie asking how important the scalp really is to hair health. Helen explains how the skin on your scalp is really no different from the skin on your face, which is why it’s so crucial for hair health. Josie asks what everyone needs to be doing in their routine in order to have a healthy scalp. Helen shares two key steps for having a healthy scalp: cleansing and a pre-wash treatment. Josie asks for tricks to get product onto the scalp, and Helen provides some tips. Josie asks about the controversial opinion that we should not be washing our hair frequently, and Helen debunks this popular TikTok myth. She also says that it’s more damaging to re-curl your hair with a curling iron than it is to re-wash and re-do your hair. She talks about how people should not be taking advice to wash their hair less frequently because we wash our faces frequently and need to treat our scalps the same way. Helen also explains why people who have dandruff need to wash their hair more frequently in order to get rid of bacteria. She discusses the true causes of dandruff and why it’s much more common than people think. Josie asks whether people with different hair types should have different routines, and Helen explains how crucial it is to eliminate silicone from your hair care routine before you know your hair type. Helen and Josie talk about how caffeine is actually better for your hair than rosemary oil, and why that is. Josie asks Helen if there’s anything we should eat in order to optimize our hair health, and Helen explains the benefit of sea moss gel for hair. She explains why our hair health is tied to our physical health. Helen and Josie chat through some of the most important tips for protecting your hair and scalp in the summertime from excessive sun and chlorine or salt water. Finally, Helen and Josie talk through some key tips for hair growth and health—plus why Helen will never use dry shampoo. The episode closes with some rapid-fire questions for Helen.
