SHOW NOTES:

On this episode of The Everygirl Podcast, Josie does an in-depth interview with pilates instructor and founder of B the Method Lia Bartha. The two kick off the conversation by discussing how Lia came to discover pilates while she was working at HBO after graduating college, and her experience of the corporate world before she struck out on her own. Lia explains how she felt after she started doing pilates consistently, discussing the mental and physical shift that prompted her to get a teaching license for pilates. The two delve into how Lia started B the Method as a business, from her move from Los Angeles to New York to the ups and downs of the pandemic. Josie asks Lia about the common notion that cardio is always a better workout than strength-based classes like pilates, and Lia explains the range of demographics and fitness levels that come to B the Method seeking more than just a great sweat. Lia then dives right into a discussion of the benefits of pilates as a practice, explaining spinal health, the transverse abdominal muscles, and the pelvic floor. The two discuss the importance of strengthening your pelvic floor and inner core regardless of your preferred workout method or gender. Josie brings up the fact that the pelvic floor is somewhat taboo, and Lia discusses the benefits of both strengthening and stretching it — and how to do those things. Josie explains how she has benefitted from pelvic floor therapy, which helped her sort out some pain that she had previously thought was gut-related. Lia discusses the benefits of raising awareness for the connection between mind and body that can come from working the pelvic floor. You’ll hear Josie ask Lia about the relationship between our pelvic floor and our sex life, and an explanation at length from Lia. The two then have a conversation about the importance of enjoying your workouts and working on the way we talk about exercise in our communities. The episode closes with some fun rapid-fire questions for Lia, including her morning routine.
