107: Erin Andrews on Infertility and Success in a Male-Dominated Industry

There's so much more to Erin Andrews that you don't know. Erin Andrews is a television personality and sportscaster who changed the landscape for women in sports, but she has learned so many lessons along the way that we can learn from. Erin and Josie talk about the challenges (and behind-the-scenes) of being a woman in a male-dominated industry, how to feel more confident (or fake it 'til you make it), and advice she would give her younger self. Erin also opens up about her cervical cancer diagnosis, battle with infertility, and her powerful journey to motherhood.

SHOW NOTES:

For this week’s Ask The Everygirl, Emma and Josie address a listener’s question about her new boyfriend who has lots of female friends. They explain why a guy having lots of female friends is actually a huge green flag, and the difference between being friendly and “micro-cheating.” Emma explains why it’s so hard to find good friends who are guys, and Josie dives into the reasons why the listener might be experiencing so much jealousy toward her boyfriend’s friends. The conversation then pivots to women’s sports, and the huge influx of support that the WNBA is getting this year. Emma presents some of her own theories about why culture is so obsessed with Caitlin Clark and other female athletes right now. The two talk about why they love this moment even as two gals who know absolutely nothing about sports, and Emma talks about how Paige Bueckers is taking over people’s FYPs. Finally, they have a brief convo about today’s guest, Erin Andrews. The interview with Erin begins with her explaining how she became so successful in her career. She talks about how her relationship with her dad inspired her to get into sports journalism and get really excited about sports. Josie asks Erin how she managed the challenges she faced in a male-dominated industry. Erin explains that the most important thing is the relationships she’s built with the players—that’s what’s allowed her to get tidbits of information that other anchors might not be able to access. She talks about how she overcame insecurities about her friendships with the athletes after years in the industry and on camera. Then, the discussion shifts to Erin’s fertility journey. She shares how she was diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2017, and after that went through nine rounds of IVF to attempt to get pregnant. She discusses the shame she initially felt when she was struggling to get pregnant, and how she turned that narrative around. Josie asks what she would share with other women who are struggling with infertility, and Erin shares her thoughts on persistence and resilience. She then discusses the Mack Grant she is providing on Baby Quest to those who are also struggling with fertility. The episode closes with some rapid-fire questions for Erin.
